What Has No Space Is Everywhere | O que não tem espaço está em todo lugar
Cinema Mentiré and Spectra present two short film programmes exploring queer Latinx diaspora experiences at QUEERCIRCLE
12 - 15 February 2025 | QUEERCIRCLE
O que não tem espaço está em todo lugar | What Has No Space Is Everywhere was created for the V&A Takeover event InBetween, hosted at UCL East in September 2024 and now will be presented at QUEERCIRCLE. The programme features films selected from a callout to queer Latinx artists, inviting works that explore the concept of "in-betweenness" as a driving force in artistic creation. From this, two programmes emerged: Territorio and Movimiento.
Territorio examines identity, memory and belonging, addressing themes of displacement and cultural synthesis. Movimiento focuses on movement and the body, presenting dance and performance as tools for empowerment and emotional intimacy. Together, these programmes explore the intersections of memory, cultural identity, gender performance, displacement and grief, proposing a dissolution of boundaries between individual and collective experiences.
Featuring works from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Venezuela and the UK, What Has No Space Is Everywhere celebrates the power of queer Latinx voices.
The title O que não tem espaço está em todo lugar | What Has No Space Is Everywhere is inspired by a short film of the same name by Jota Mombaça, a Brazilian interdisciplinary artist based in Europe. Blending travel diaries and essays, that work guided us in the curation of this programme, affirming life and resistance even amid pain and interdiction for dissident bodies and subjectivities.
This activity is part of Real to Reel: An Exploration of Queer Community Filmmaking, a series of screenings, panels, workshops and a residency taking place from 7 February to 31 March 2025 at QUEERCIRCLE. See the full programme here.
Content warning: the films might include scenes of nudity, sexuality and explicit content (Territorio) and violent references and images of corpses (Movimiento).
