MIRIAM MiENTE + Director Q&A
The Twelve30 Collective and Cinema Mentiré present Miriam miente (Miriam Lies), Dominican Republic, 2018, by Natalia Cabral & Oriol Estrada
3 NOVEMBER - 3 PM | Rich Mix
Twelve30 Collective in partnership with Cinema Mentiré invites you to the screening of Dominican coming-of-age Miriam miente (Miriam Lies), Dominican Republic, 2018, by Natalia Cabral and Oriol Estrada.
A quiet middle-class world of good intentions begins to crumble when fourteen-year-old Miriam acts suspicious about her Internet boyfriend. As her family and friends prepare a traditional 15th birthday party for her, Miriam doesn't know how to explain the truth about her boyfriend and delays the moment of truth. Class and race intersect in this sensitive coming-of-age drama set in Santo Domingo, in another production from an exciting and refreshing new wave of cinema from the Dominican Republic.
It’s painful to witness the corrosive effects endemic and internalised racism has on all concerned, but Miriam is bound to win your heart in this topical exploration of identity politics, making Cabral & Estrada’s fiction feature debut a terrific and unusual film about the pains and joys of growing up within social structure. The film won Best Screenplay at the Gijón Film Festival.
Film director Natalia Cabral will join us after the screening for an in-person Q&A.

MIRIAM MIENTE
For the shy teen Miriam, life shouldn’t be much more than sunny afternoons spent with best friend Jennifer, talking about boys and making preparations for their upcoming joint quinceañera party. However, her aim to invite her online boyfriend to the party doesn’t quite go to plan, and Miriam is caught between what she wants to be and her upwardly mobile mother’s aspirations for her. Miriam cannot fail to see the implications of being a Black woman in a society obsessed with Western standards of beauty, and a quiet middle-class world of good intentions will begin to crumble.
